Mailbox Monday January 9

It's Monday and time for Mailbox Monday! I'll bet you are wondering why the spring mailbox. It feels like spring here in the Midwest. The fact that it is January and I have not had to touch a snow shovel or winter gloves is amazing! It really should look like the mailbox below. I am not complaining though! This fantastic weather is making me a very happy camper! The other day I was able to run errands with only a poncho on, not a parka that makes me look like the kid from Christmas Story. If it stayed like this all winter, I would not be sad. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that Mother Nature will come to her senses and bless us with some snow and cold. And the mailbox will look like this:

Mailbox Monday is being hosted by Alyce at At Home With Books. Thank you for hosting Alyce! Be sure to check out her blog.

I won a signed book from Goodreads, which I am very excited about. I saw the book trailer for this book and it really spoke to me. It is not my usual type of read but this is one of those subjects that haunts me. When I hear the words human trafficking, my stomach cringes. It amazes me that this is allowed to go on. While I think there will be parts of this novel that will be difficult to stomach, I am anxious to read it. The book has the most amazing feeling pages too. I love the weight of the paper. It is one of those books that is a pleasure to hold in your hands.

A Walk Across the Sun by Corban Addison

Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: SilverOak (January 3, 2012)
Language: English

Summary

Corban Addison leads readers on a chilling, eye-opening journey into Mumbai's seedy underworld--and the nightmare of two orphaned girls swept into the international sex trade.

When a tsunami rages through their coastal town in India, 17-year-old Ahalya Ghai and her 15-year-old sister Sita are left orphaned and homeless. With almost everyone they know suddenly erased from the face of the earth, the girls set out for the convent where they attend school. They are abducted almost immediately and sold to a Mumbai brothel owner, beginning a hellish descent into the bowels of the sex trade.

Halfway across the world, Washington, D.C., attorney Thomas Clarke faces his own personal and professional crisis-and makes the fateful decision to pursue a pro bono sabbatical working in India for an NGO that prosecutes the subcontinent's human traffickers. There, his conscience awakens as he sees firsthand the horrors of the trade in human flesh, and the corrupt judicial system that fosters it. Learning of the fate of Ahalya and Sita, Clarke makes it his personal mission to rescue them, setting the stage for a riveting showdown with an international network of ruthless criminals.

These next books are ones I bought from Barnes and Noble online with my Christmas gift card. They were all $2.99 and for some reason I got one free. Maybe there was a buy 3, get 1 free sale? Not sure. These were all books on my wish list from the past.

Hidden by Shelley Shepard Gray
The Divorce Party by Laura Dave
The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown
Summer House by Nancy Thayer

That is my mailbox. What wonderful books made their way into your home?

I'm glad you are having warm weather. We've had a little bit of snow, but it has been pretty good. *fingers crossed* it stays like this.

  6. A Walk Across the Sun sounds really good.

I no longer keep track of the books that come in. Mainly, because I don't request too many these days. Mostly just what I want to read. I recently received Dan Chaon's collection stories titled Stay Awake.

  9. Our weather in western NY state has been the same and I'm loving it too! I'm so afraid we are going to make up for it in the spring - please no snow in May!!

All of your books look so good (great sale!) and I have several on my wish list. I've been anxious to read The Weird Sisters and look forward to hearing what you think about it. A Walk Across The Sun looks like a great win too. I know exactly what you mean about the weight of the paper, the feel of the book. So enjoyable!

  13. Hi Beth,

Some great books there, this week. I am particularly looking forward to reading 'The Weird Sisters', which is already on my reading list.

It is also very unseasonably mild, here in the South of the UK. We have had one or two stormy, windy days, but so far at least, no frosts or snow at all. Spring flowers are blooming, birds are nest-building and I even spotted a butterfly last week! I really do hope that we aren't going to suffer big time for this later!!

    Have a great week.

    Yvonne

  15. It looks like you got a lot of good books there. I look forward too your reviews.

As for the weather it's the same here - maybe a bit cooler than you are but still fantastic other than the rain we've been getting. I hope it continues like this but, like you, I'm kinda waiting for Mother Nature to come to her senses and punish us. Lol.

Hope you have a good week Beth!

  16. I used my Barnes and Noble gift card and got one free too, didn't know why either. I almost picked the Divorce Party and Hidden but others swayed me away. I really liked Summer House and I loved the Weird Sisters. Happy Reading.

  20. A Walk Across the Sun sounds like a very heavy emotional book, but the cover is gorgeous! I appreciate it when books have nice paper too.

  22. I am just loving the non-winter we are having in the Midwest. I had daffodils popping up in the garden this weekend which is about 2 months too soon.

I have a copy of A Walk Across the Sun but I haven't read it yet. It looks like a good but depressing story.

  23. Some lovely looking books there.

We have had a mild winter and so far we have not seen any snow.

I do have a feeling we could have some before easter.

    Have a good week

  24. As to A Walk Across the Sun - I'm so with you on how I feel about that one; I'm interested to see what you think of it, because I'm eying it for myself. I also love books that have lovely bindings, pages, and graphic elements - I don't think publishers pay enough attention to those details.

Great buys for you, too - I have The Weird Sisters on my to-buy list!

    Enjoy your reading week!
